What a week! We have just returned from Home London at Earls court where we spoke to over 60 buying contacts and handed out over 200 brochures and 50 press packs. Icluded in this list of people interested in the vast array of products we showed from 10 of the newest design brands, were Jamie Oliver, Firebox, Barbican, Steamer trading, Design 55online, Purdies, Prezzybox, Trendease and countless press agents, small independent retailers and online stores. New Designers join 5ml Design Collective to exhibit at Home 2012!!!

In under 2 years, the 5ml Design Collective have gone from strength to strength bringing talented designers to retailers and the buying public. With 8 trade shows under their belt in such a short space of time their collective grows ever stronger, at London Design Week last September they showed for the first time at the Truman Brewery “Tent London” show which proved to be one of the most widely attended and strongest exhibitions in the guide.

5ml are excited to be amongst the prestigious line up of design retail companies premiering at the definitive new trade event for homewares and interior accessories and are eager to promote their latest collective members of independent design talent at Home 2012. Building on their reputation of promoting high quality, design led retail products, they will introduce a new eclectic ensemble of interior led products from British and European design independents.

Amongst these will be Earthome whom provide good quality solid timber furniture and product accessories at an affordable price. They aim for the furniture and products to be manufactured fairly and responsibly minimising the environmental impact of each of our products. Gift items are designed and made by Earthome at their workshop in the UK. For Home Earthome will be showcasing ‘Bird on a Wire’ wall mounted oak coat rack and ‘Bread board’ quirky solid oak breadboard in the shape of a thick cut slice of bread. German-born designer, Bettina Nissen has an eye for observation, extracting everyday symbols and routines, incorporating them into her designs. Her pieces often feature contrasting elements or materials with the aim of creating curious, thoughtful and witty contemporary design. Fusing simple, functional forms with humour, Bettina Nissen designs innovative products that generate subtle shifts in our perception of daily life. At Home she will display ‘Blurb’ coat hooks made from white powder coated steel from which memos can be written for the owners of the hung coats. She will also be promoting her fun ‘Shadow’ coasters made from 100% wool felt which create stylised shadows from you cup or mug.

Italian architect and furniture designer Fabrizio Collovà will be premiering his ‘London 77’ stool which holds modular capabilities designed for social interaction in outdoor spaces. Talented designer maker Naomi Paul will illuminate all visitors to the stand with her clever crocheted ‘Glück’ pendant lamps evolved from the desire to create lighting that is timeless, playful and quietly opulent. The London based designer creates some truly unique and intelligent textiles for interior products and spaces. Her aesthetic is clean and modern yet takes inspiration and methods from the past.

Internationally recognized and published Designer Enameller Ruth Ball will showcase ‘Urban Changes’ one of her architectural enamelled wall pieces on steel. The extent of her making spans contemporary jewellery, fine silverware and unique artworks for public or private display. Observation of colour and light in everyday environments sustains her modern design style. Ruth Ball will also feature one of her collaborative pieces with 5ml Director Tom Sutton ‘Equilibrium Edition Series28’ table with bespoke enamelled artwork on copper.

Annabel Williams is a hand weaver using traditional techniques fused with contemporary materials to create bespoke hand woven interior products. Based on a 16shaft loom Annabel creates wall mounted light boxes and one off interior products. Inspirations come from her urban environment and a love of mid century design and colour. The use of traditional weaving techniques with a mix of monofilament, lurex and silk yarns is key. Annabel will be showing her ‘Drum’ lampshade made from lurex and silk on tripod stand.

The 5ml collective welcomes back established designers from previous shows including; 4D products with their innovative modular photo display system ‘Snapswall’. Maestro of interactive illumination Mimetics will be showcasing the limited edition interactive LED lighting panels ‘Quantum 42’ and ‘Quantum Pearl’ which always draw great interest as they dazzle all visitors to the stand. Following on from the favourable response and success of ‘Sworth’, 5ml Directors Ilsa Parry and Tom Sutton will once again team up to present new collaborative work for Rethinkthings®. A new derivative of Tom’s popular ‘Wall Cells’ which will embrace the spirit of 2012 with ‘Olympian’ style. Ilsa will also present her highly successful ‘Bauhaus birdfeeders’ and illuminate us with her friendly ghost lamp ‘Kaspa’..

Zooming in on pattern, light, texture and volume. Each pixel is a sample of an original image which renders itself an essential element. Every product promoted with 5ml holds that same value and combined they promote a strong image of independent product design and design led craft currently available. Every additional pixel, texel, luxel and voxel that becomes part of the 5ml collective contributes to an ongoing picture illustrating the best examples of lighting, textiles, furniture, homeware, lifestyle accessories and jewellery.

In just over one year, the 5ml Design Collective have gone from strength to strength bringing talented designers to retailers and the buying public. At LDF2011, 5ml will present an ensemble of independent design talent showcasing innovative and iconic products by both emerging and established designers and crafts people. The eclectic mix of products showcased will demonstrate the high standard of product design and design led craft alongside one another. The latest members to exhibit with the collective include; Li’l Corbeau whose work encompasses a taste for simple style with bold colour resulting in a jewellery collection that extends from themes that have previously inspired and informed the creator Deborah Crow. Scotland based Mimetics is new to 5ml will be launching an interactive LED lighting panel ‘Quantum 42’. Bojaki – new graduates of Central st Martins London will present their highly original and well crafted folded fabric lighting which becomes a rigid product through inflating with foam. All of the products which form part of the pixel, luxel, texel voxel theme combine traditional fabrication with digital development techniques or vice versa. The products are a truly inspiring cross section of concept led contemporary product design in a digital age and despite embracing new technologies, the items retain a human element which should intrigue and delight the viewer.

The 5ml collective welcomes back established designers from previous shows including; 4D Products of Crosby Merseyside with their innovative modular photo display system ‘Snapswall’. Goodwin & Goodwin of London return to the 5ml stand with their quirky ‘Bookendings’ and innovative ‘Envelope’ storage units and following on from his growing success at both Spring Fair, Pulse and Tent, Steven Almond of St Helens Merseyside will bring a sense of fun to the stand with his ‘Launch’ candle holders and his recently released ‘Cliff’ coat hooks resembling rock climbers, from buyers accounts this appears to be a must have item for 2012 and an essential accessory to any well meaning wall. Completing the group, there will be a jewellery showcase from international members Sam Design, their work demonstrating a perfection and mastery of the metal arts.

Mersey based 5ml Directors Ilsa Parry and Tom Sutton will also present new work, Tom shows examples of Aero-Organic furniture designs including one-off versions from his Series28 collection with limited edition enamelled artwork by Internationally recognized Enameller Ruth Ball as part of the 5ml stand, and independent to 5ml, Ilsa will showcase her REthinkthings LTD collection with new lines for 2012 such as the natural range of ONMI transformable Velcro bags, a new cool blue afterglow in the Kaspa lighting range and a new production line of Bauhaus birdfeeders in four colours and two sizes, recently licensed from Julia Jacob who tested the market with 5ml last year before joining REthinkthings. REthinkthings has grown enormously since showing at Liverpool last year, the company went LTD in April and since then has increased production ranges selling to a wide range of design led boutiques in the UK and has also exported in quantity to 5 countries.

At Liverpool Design Show, REthinkthings will launch a tweetathon campaign using QR codes on the stand to encourage a debate on good design offering a prize to the most engaged user. Ilsa says:

“REthinkthings is about questioning the meaning of our surroundings and the physical make up of the world we live in. As such I want to involve stand visitors in thinking about the value of the products on show, its a brave move but one that I believe deserves a forum”

5ml and REthinkthings continue to work in partnership from their studio in Liverpool City Centre, supporting new talent internationally to find new markets for their work and source quantity production. They are putting the North West design scene firmly on the map and encouraging industry accessibility through internships and consultation to maintain creativity in product design and contribute to growth in the industry.

With 6 trade shows under their belt in such a short space of time their collective grows ever stronger, at London Design Week this September they will show for the first time at the Truman Brewery “Tent London” show which promises to be one of the most widely attended and strongest exhibitions in the guide.

With a huge 9 metre stand, 5ml will present an ensemble of independent design talent showcasing innovative and iconic products by both emerging and established designers and crafts people. The eclectic mix of products showcased will demonstrate the high standard of product design and design led craft alongside one another. The latest members to join the collective include Mimetics who will be launching an interactive LED lighting panel ‘Quantum 42’ and recent graduate Jenna Hayes with her collection of digitally printed silk scarves. Clare Testar, also a new graduate was well covered by the press at New Designers in June this year and will be showing her ‘Reflective’ stool. This slick, innovative seat with mirror clad lower legs appears to magically float above whichever surface it is placed upon. Bojaki will present their highly original and well crafted folded fabric lighting which becomes a rigid product through inflating with foam, whilst glass artist Hannah Lovett will showcase one of her highly crafted bespoke wall pieces using recycled glass with complementing sustainable materials. Independent designer maker Francesca Mancini, will exhibit her bold and innovative furniture piece ‘When I grow…’ which combines aesthetic charm with an original approach to utilitarian quality.

What is the vision behind the 5ML Design Collective, and what are you trying to achieve?

5ml provides an affordable marketing and promotional platform for independent designers connecting them with international buyers and showcasing the retail potential of their products whether they be product based for mass production or high end design led craft. We aim to support independent designers by providing the opportunity for them to have a presence at internationally recognised design events.

Where did the idea for 5ml arise from?

We initially came together last year to exhibit at Pulse, five designers based around Manchester and Liverpool. We felt that a group stand would give us a greater presence and exposure. We were overwhelmed by the positive response from buyers, organisers and fellow exhibitors. The three founding members IlsaParry, Michael Cloke and myself, Tom Sutton realised the potential of providing an affordable platform for emerging and established designers alike.

Within three months of exhibiting at Pulse we were showcasing sixteen individual designers products at Maison et Objet and 5ml had grown into a full company

promoting and marketing independent designers to International markets.

What advice and services do you offer to Designers?

In addition to exhibiting with us at major design events we also offer a membership package that gives each designer profile and product exposure on the 5ml website and they will also be included in the annual catalogue which is scheduled for a September release in time for London Design Week. This catalogue will be sent out to all our buyer contacts including Architectural and Interior associates. We are also in the process of setting up a consultancy service and series of support workshops that are aimed at undergraduates and recent graduates that prepares them for international trade events and offer them the opportunity to develop their designs for the retail market. We also offer designers the opportunity to license the production of their products through Ilsa’s sister company ReThinkthings.

Please tell me more about some of the highlights that have happened in the 5ml journey thus far?!

Maison et Objet was quite a challenge as we were still in the early stages of establishing ourselves as a independent design collective and we were fully aware of the fact that the French market was difficult to get a foothold. However, we secured respectable orders from the independent boutiques and successfully completed a substantial order on behalf of one of our designers with the prestigious French lingerie company ‘Princesse Tam Tam’

This asserted our position as a formidable independent collective amongst the design retail network. Since Maison we have also had successful shows at Liverpool Design Festival and Spring Fair International, promoting over twenty separate designers within our first twelve months.

How do you select which Designers to work with? Is there a process for any Designers looking for a platform with 5ML?

Designers can become members of 5ml at any time and this is on an annual basis. Alternatively, designers can apply to exhibit at selected events with us. We aim to select work that sits well together yet creates an eclectic mix. Each piece has it’s own strong individual presence but provides a collective strength within the display that complements the surrounding products. All work must be of a high standard suitable to the retail market, we encourage concept led designs but they must be suitable for production. Design led craft is also an important part of the 5ml mix demonstrating the variety and versatility of independent design to a broad range of potential retail markets. Design isn’t all about mass production, we also want to promote high quality small production and one off pieces suitable to the high end and collectors market. Design is the key; from the affordable to the collectable, if there is a strong design identity then it could be promoted through 5ml.

What other fairs and exhibitions are you hoping to display at in 2011/2012?

We are showing at Tent as part of London Design Week were we want to promote the balance and strength between design led craft alongside product design suitable for mass production. We hope to return to Liverpool Design Festival in October and early next year we aim to have a presence at Home2012 the sister show to Top Drawer.

Where can the general public buy products created by the 5ML portfolio Designers?

Successful designers who have exhibited with 5ml have had their products stocked at independent design boutiques across Europe alongside recognised online design stores. As the 5ml website develops we hope to establish an on-line store for the public from contributing designers within the 5ml family.

What exciting new things do you have lined up for the immediate/ long term future?

We have lots of things going on and in development at present and we are also working on our own individual design ranges so we have to keep reminding ourselves to come up for air. 5ml has developed in a short space of time so we need to build on our accomplishments so that we can continue to support and promote our designers effectively and simultaneously provide striking and innovative design to the international design retail market.

5ml is a Liverpool based design collective, bringing new talent into the design industry. 5ml is directed by Ilsa Parry, Mike Cloke and Tom Sutton. Three well known and respected product and furniture designers who have seen massive success in the last 6 months collaborating to assist creatives to realise their vision to see their concepts and prototypes in stores.

5ml are currently looking to recruit new, talented designers who have new creative and interesting products or prototypes to expose to serious buyers. 5ml can offer support, subsidisation and advice where necessary for less experienced collaborators or can simply take the expense out of whole stands by sharing expertise with more established companies looking to test the market. 5ml have already exhibited in Major UK and European Trade Shows such as Maison et Objet, and Spring Fair, seeing many of their clients go into full scale production for major high st retailers as a result.

Spring fair a big success

Well spring fair is over and it was well worthwhile, although we weren't sure at first whether our elclectic design led ranges would go down well in such a commercial show we met some key clients such as john lewis, Lakeland and jamie olivers team aswell as lots of smaller Uk based independent retailers and international distributors, so this gives us greater strength as a collective going forward and offering more designers the chance to connect with serious buyers. As a result of our efforts, we got huge compliments on our stand and display of the items, we felt we made good visual impact in comparison with some of the more everday items on the surrounding stands. Being in hall 9 in spotlight on design led homewares proved beneficial as Wgsn emaps trend forecasters picked out over 50/ of our collection for inclusion in their trend house display in hall ten, only confirming what we already knew that we really do have a great eye for design! 5ml are now in the process of negotiating with contacts to convert our leads to sales on behalf of the designers we represented, in the pipeline is a 10000 unit licensing deal for one designer and a 500 unit initial distribution deal for another, we have also begun to sign off purchase orders for smaller outlets. All in all spring fair was definately worthwhile although we would be sure to select the lower priced items in the future. Next up pulse 2011 in londons earls court in June! This will be our third year exhibiting at this show and we are looking to have a much greater presence and focus our display on quirky homewares in particular. Well here we go then, to the right of this post is a preview of what you can expect to see if you come to visit us at Maison et Objet. 5ml will be exhibiting as part of the BEDG in Hall 7 (NOW! design a vivre) We have been very smart at 5ml HQ and harvested the most exciting and unique collection of designer makers we could find so that European retailers and other international buyers can benefit from a wide array of fantastic objects at reasonable prices! Alltogether 5ml will be representing the work of 18 designers, some have several products on the large stand we have taken and collectively the range looks fantastic (or should I say Fantastique? - bof!)

5ml have been offered the opportunity to exhibit at Maison et Objet Paris at the Villepinte expo hall and we would like to invite you to apply to submit your products or prototypes for selection. 5ml would take your work to Paris on your behalf and actively market it, producing press releases, flyers and price lists for the collective, your images, short biography and product details would be included. We then discuss the product with international buyers and visual merchandisers / producers and try to secure orders for your product, opportunities for larger scale production and potential commissions and collaboration work we negotiate the best prices for you and assist you with making your work more commercial. The process is straightforward and the upfront costs are low, you get an international presence at an exclusive trade fair and your brand gets seen by thousands without the added expense of hotels and transportation, we get reduced stand costs and take a tiny percentage of the work secured for you.

Upfront cost = £100 - £200 per product submitted depending on size
Optional extras = £30 to take your portfolio and sell you as a designer as well as your product
We take 5% of revenue generated - think of us as affordable agents...

You dont have to deal with any of the interested parties, we do all of that for you so you can get on with the important job of being creative and generating more great ideas!Then you reap the rewards and gain the contacts at the end

Example:
"Alex Price" has designed a vase. it measures 50cm x 50cm x 50cm it costs him £100 for us to expose it for him at Maison. He also is a fantastic CAD technician with a strong portfolio and he submits this at a cost of £30 additional. We take his vase and examples of his CAD work we produce flyers / brochures / price lists / presspacks and press releases, we design the stand, we take the work, we display it to appeal to commercial organisations, we talk to visitors at the show, we big up the designer and we sell their skillset
Alex has a wholsale price of £100 per vase, we secure 50 orders for him - he makes £5000 from this - 5ml retain £250 towards their next trade fair

Alex also secures a commission to work 5 days freelance on CAD models for a manufacturer at a fixed day rate of £200 per day - he makes £1000 from this - 5ml retain £50
So alex invested £130 in total in the 5ml solution. He made a return of £5700 in total, that is 44 x his original outlay
